How many years have you been working in your field?
Describe what you do.
I work as an Advertising and Marketing Director for a swimming pool company and as a side hustle I also run a photography and video production company called Patelagram.
Describe how you do it.
In a broad sense, I get to create ideas! Everything from online advertising campaigns, to social media contest, and in-store interior design. Everything comes into play when creating a physical and online user experience. But most importantly, is creating tangible numbers to back up the investments made in these different areas. This is where creativity meets reality!
Describe why you do it.
As artists, we are used to the ups and downs of financial security. Advertising is a great way to add credibility and worth to your art in a demanding and fast pace environment. Meeting the needs of the company challenges me to be better at what I do, and in return, shows up in my personal work. But this works both ways. Sometimes, the things you learn from your hobby creations in turn teach you how to do something better for work, and vise-versa.
What was the first step you took to become what you are now?
My college education gave me the skills and know how to get into the world of advertising. If it were not for amazing professors in college that challenged my way of thinking and attention to detail, I would never be where I am now. Also, my involvement in the community while still in college gave me a network of piers with whom I was able to work on projects and gain valuable experience in the field of Advertising and Design.
What do you wish you had paid more attention to in school?
When I was in school, as most probably do, I thought I had it all figured out. The first couple years after school, however, I quickly learned how much I had to learn. And everyday I am learning more about this field of work, which changes daily. If there was one thing I wish I could do differently, it would be that I wish I had sought out real role models that I looked up to and gained knowledge from about the different opportunities of work after college as well as learned form their skill sets and experience.
